Tesla Claims 1.74 Million FSD Subscribers

The automaker’s latest reporting includes upfront buyers in its subscription total to align with executive compensation criteria.

Tesla reported that it has reached a total of 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions as of its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter. This figure represents a 67 percent increase over the previous year. The company clarified that this metric is calculated specifically to align with the terms of the 2025 CEO Performance Award, a structure that includes both customers who pay monthly and those who purchased the software outright.

The methodology behind this count is central to the current discussion. Under this definition, any vehicle with active FSD software is included in the total, regardless of whether the owner paid the full price upfront or is currently paying the $99 monthly fee in the United States. Tesla ceased selling the software as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026, meaning all new customers are now locked into the subscription model. However, the millions of vehicles sold previously, some at prices up to $15,000, remain in the active count as long as the car is operational. The only exclusions from this total are free trial periods.

This reporting approach is significant because achieving 10 million active FSD subscriptions is a specific operational milestone required for Elon Musk to earn portions of his 2025 compensation package. The award consists of twelve tranches, each tied to both market capitalization and operational goals. As of June 30, Tesla indicated that only the 20 million vehicle delivery milestone was considered probable. The inclusion of upfront buyers in the subscription count helps the company progress toward the 10 million target, a figure that was 1.28 million just six months prior.

In addition to the subscription total, Tesla highlighted a 75 percent attach rate for new North American deliveries during the third quarter. The company described this as a nearly twenty percentage point increase from the previous period and stated its belief that FSD is driving demand in available markets. While Tesla noted that the active subscription metric excludes free trials, the letter did not provide similar clarifications for the attach rate, leaving it unclear how many of these new buyers are still paying after introductory offers expire.

The pace of growth provides context for future projections. Tesla added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in the third quarter, its highest quarterly gain to date. If this rate continues, the company would reach the 10 million milestone in approximately eight years. However, at the average growth rate of the last twelve months, which was roughly 700,000 subscriptions annually, the timeline extends to about twelve years. The compensation award remains valid through 2035, providing a long window for these targets to be met. Tesla’s broader cumulative deliveries figure, now at 10.2 million, also includes unsupervised Robotaxis to match the pay package’s 20 million vehicle requirement.
