Anthropic Investors See Billions in Gains Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion Listing

Early backers and late-stage firms stand to make windfalls as the AI lab prepares for a public offering this year.

The financial landscape for artificial intelligence investors is shifting rapidly as Anthropic prepares for what could be the most significant public offering in recent history. A listing is expected later this year at a valuation reaching up to $2 trillion. This move promises substantial returns for both early and late-stage stakeholders. Even before the official stock debut, the company's current private market valuation stands at $965 billion. This figure alone places billions of dollars in the pockets of various venture capital firms and individual backers who have supported the leading AI lab through its growth phases.

The numbers behind these holdings reveal just how dramatic the appreciation has been for key players. According to data from Bloomberg and PitchBook, the stakes held by these investors have grown exponentially since their initial commitments. The diversity of entry points ranges from the company's earliest days to its most recent high-value rounds. Each investment has seen a significant jump in value, reflecting the market's intense interest in the sector.

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, is among the most notable individual beneficiaries of this growth. He participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021, a time when the startup was valued at just $461 million. Today, Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation of $965 billion, his ownership stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This represents a massive increase from the entry point of his initial investment several years ago.

On the institutional side, Iconiq made a bold move last year by writing a $6 billion check to Anthropic. At that time, the company was already valued at $183 billion. This late-stage bet has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position could double in value once the company completes its initial public offering. The scale of this investment underscores the confidence large funds place in the firm's future trajectory.

Menlo Ventures also holds a significant position in the company. The firm led the Series D funding round and has invested over $1 billion in Anthropic over time. Its current stake is valued at $14 billion. This firm has been a consistent supporter of the AI lab, contributing to its capital needs during critical phases of expansion and development.

Sequoia joined the investor lineup earlier this year, backing the AI lab when the valuation had reached $380 billion. The firm invested $3 billion to secure roughly 1% ownership. This investment has already more than doubled in value. The rapid appreciation highlights the premium the market places on established players in the artificial intelligence space, even for relatively recent entrants.

Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also has a substantial holding. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. It subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment now represents a stake worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital stands out as the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach a current value of $7 billion. Such a return on investment illustrates the high-risk, high-reward nature of backing disruptive technology companies.

The stakes for these investors are high as they approach the public markets. The transition from private to public ownership will likely solidify these gains and provide liquidity for long-term holders. The potential for further growth at a $2 trillion valuation suggests that the financial impact of Anthropic's journey will be felt across the broader investment community. For now, the numbers confirm that those who bet on the company early have seen their fortunes multiply considerably.

As the IPO date nears, attention will turn to how the public market values the company. The private market's $965 billion mark serves as a strong baseline for expectations. The diverse group of backers, from tech legends to major VC firms, is positioned to realize significant profits. This development marks a pivotal moment for the AI industry and the investors who have fueled its rapid rise.
