AI Startup Pushes Toward $30 Billion Raise, Shaping Market Ahead of Public Debut
OpenAI is negotiating a new private funding round that would set a record valuation for a non-public company.

Reports indicate OpenAI is preparing to secure up to $30 billion in fresh capital through a private financing round rather than proceeding directly to an initial public offering. The artificial intelligence lab is negotiating a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion for this transaction, according to sources familiar with the matter. The funding is reportedly being led by Coatue and investors based in the United Arab Emirates, though the specific terms of the deal remain under discussion and subject to change.
The proposed valuation represents a significant step up from previous funding milestones for the company. In March, a financing round valued the maker of ChatGPT at $852 billion on a post-money basis. Since then, OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for a public offering in June. While the company has taken steps toward a public debut, this current effort to raise capital through private channels suggests a continued reliance on institutional backing to fuel its operations ahead of any listing.
The financial implications of such a valuation are substantial for the broader technology sector. Should this round close at the reported $1.25 trillion figure, OpenAI would become the most highly valued private company in history. Such a figure would also set a formidable benchmark for the company’s eventual IPO, establishing expectations for how much the public markets might be willing to pay for the firm.
The proposed valuation would also have ripple effects regarding other major players in the artificial intelligence industry, specifically Anthropic. Reports indicate that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its own public debut. Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation in what was considered a final private round before an IPO, and the company also filed confidential paperwork for a public offering in June.
The potential involvement of investors from the United Arab Emirates adds another layer to the transaction. Reports suggest that the infusion of capital from the region could be linked to an agreement providing OpenAI with additional computing capacity. As negotiations continue regarding the final structure of the deal, the outcome will determine the financial footing for one of the world's most prominent technology companies as it navigates the path toward the public markets.
