A 17-year-old resident of McKinney has been taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on suspicion of plotting to assassinate U.S. Representative Keith Self.

The arrest, which occurred on October 5, marks a significant escalation in the security posture for the Republican lawmaker, who is currently seeking a third term in office for Texas’ third congressional district. Self’s campaign officials confirmed the detention to NBC 5, noting that their team first learned of the situation through U.S. Capitol Police on October 6. According to the campaign, federal investigators believed the teenager had been radicalized and was under active surveillance. The plot reportedly involved a terrorist attack planned in the name of ISIS, with the specific target being a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. This event was set to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests, making it a prime location for the alleged assailant to strike.

In response to the threat, Rep. Self stated that his team increased their situational awareness and security protocols, although he noted he already maintained a strong security presence. Drawing on his background in combat deployments, the congressman described his reaction as calm rather than panicked. He explained that because the suspect had already been arrested, the immediate focus was determining whether the teen was a lone wolf or part of a larger cell. Self emphasized that while the incident was serious, it did not cause him the same level of distress it might have caused colleagues without military experience. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also viewed the situation with gravity, having previously seen him off on multiple deployments.

Despite the alleged assassination plot, Self proceeded with his campaign activities and attended the targeted fundraiser as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the event, where no incident occurred. Since the arrest, he has continued to greet voters and campaign across the district, stating that the threat will not deter him from alerting the American public to what he describes as a concerning political ideology. His opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, publicly condemned the plot on social media. The teenager’s identity remains undisclosed while the investigation continues, and the FBI Dallas office was contacted for additional details but had not yet responded as of the latest reports.

The incident unfolds against a backdrop of heightened political tension in North Texas, particularly regarding religious and cultural issues. In September, Rep. Self introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and asserting that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This stance aligns with local debates in McKinney, where the city council unanimously approved an expansion plan for a local mosque in August. That approval followed hours of contentious public comment and was subsequently followed by an effort to recall several council members. The convergence of these local disputes with a federal-level security threat underscores the complex environment in which Self is running for reelection.
